Angels Lefty Reid Angels rookie Reed Detmers was without a striker in eight innings against the Tampa Bay Race, a bid that survived a borderline error in the seventh. On Tuesday night, the 22-year-old played 94 games, shooting two and walking one. The Angels lead 8-0.
Brett Phillips was in seventh place when first baseman Jared Walsh went to the right and touched Phillips’ bottom. The crowd applauded, and Walsh clapped moments later as the video board showed the official goalscorer ruled out the error.
Harold Ramirez hit the ball with a flyball into the left-center warning lane before being caught by Brandon Marsh and sending Arozarena into the center to end the inning. Detmers conceded three times in the last 16 in 11 places.
Detmers retired his first 15 strikers before Taylor Wallace took the lead in the sixth round. Then Anthony Randon made a fine jump to hold off Vidal Bryan’s line, and Kevin Kirmayer made a double play to finish the inning.
Detmers made a fine save in the fifth set when he quickly caught midfielder Randy Arozarena.
This season, the left-hander is trying to finish second without a big striker after five New York Mets pitchers combine against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 29. Last season, the majors had a record nine without advancing.
Detmers started his 11th career.
Detmers entered the game with a career rating of 2-4 and a 6.33 ERA. He went 1-1 with a 5.32 ERA in his first five starts this season. This is the first time the Detmers have made seven innings in a match. His previous career-best was six rounds against Houston last season.
The last time without the Angels forward was on July 12, 2019. When Taylor Cole and Felix Pena joined the team in the team’s first home game since the death of early pitcher Tyler Skags against the Seattle Mariners.
