Lionel Messi netted a hat-trick to help Inter Miami thrash New England Revolution 6-2, setting a points record for a regular Major League Soccer campaign.
Inter Miami capped off their regular MLS season in style, breaking the league’s all-time points record with a thrilling 5-2 victory over the New England Revolution.
The win took Miami to 74 points, surpassing the previous record of 73 points set by the New England Revolution in 2021.
Comeback Victory Seals Record-Breaking Season
Despite already securing the MLS Supporters’ Shield for the best regular-season record, Miami found themselves 2-0 down after early goals from Luca Langoni and Dylan Borrero.
However, Luis Suarez inspired the comeback with a brace that leveled the match before Lionel Messi’s introduction in the 58th minute helped Miami take control.
Messi’s Magic Changes the Game
Fresh from scoring a hat-trick for Argentina midweek, Messi quickly made an impact. His play contributed to Benjamin Cremaschi’s goal that put Miami ahead 3-2. Messi then stole the show, scoring his first with a powerful left-footed shot from outside the area after linking up with Suarez.
He added his second with a composed side-foot finish and completed his hat-trick after a Suarez assist, taking his MLS tally to 20 goals this season.
Looking Ahead: Playoffs and the FIFA Club World Cup
With the regular season complete, Miami now sets its sights on the MLS playoffs, where they will aim to secure the MLS Cup.
Additionally, the club is preparing for their upcoming participation in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, an exciting opportunity for the relatively young club.
The Suarez-Messi partnership has proven crucial for Miami, and with their record-breaking form, they head into the postseason as favorites to capture more silverware.
