A Anthony Varvaro former MLB pitcher who quit baseball to pursue a career in law enforcement died Sunday during a 9/11 memorial tour.

New Jersey State Police tweeted late Sunday that Port Authority police officer Anthony Varvaro died in a car crash. Authorities tell he was on his way to report for “detailed duties at the 9/11 ceremony at the World Trade Center.”

TBS, a New Jersey State Police spokesman, told the news that the incident occur in Jersey City at around 4:25 a.m. when his vehicle was hit.
