Ariana and Rose are ready to transition from indie artists to mainstream stars.
On Friday, the Brooklyn-based pop singer released her debut album. Lonely Hearts Club, a stunning dance album full of simple hooks and authoritative lyrics that her ancestors (like Madonna, Robyn, and Kylie Minogue) would be proud of.
Ahead of the album’s release, news spoke to the star (real name: Ariana DiLorenzo) about her journey as an independent artist, predicting the rise of dance pop and finding viral fame on TikTok. I wrote everything during the pandemic. I’m alone in my apartment doing nothing and writing as a coping mechanism, just a lifesaver at the end of the day. And it was those songs that end up being record. So I have written everything on the piano. The first idea I had was the “Lonely Hearts Club” chorus – the first I wrote. And the second song we wrote was “Every Body.” Even from the start, I wanted it to be a little more interesting to dance to; I knew I wanted it to have some home feel. I want to explore all possible definitions of dance music on this record; some things are pure pop.
100 percent. Throughout history, house music has been reborn whenever the going gets tough. So I wasn’t surprise when Beyonce release this song. I said, “Oh, sure.” Of course, as independent artists, we had to start a few years ago to set things up. But it’s a perfect affirmation to see it leak like, “Okay. I trust my instincts when I make an album.” I wanted to do something about the time when the world opened up. Thank God we are in a place where we can be together, dance, sweat, and cry. But we’re all inside. I felt like everyone was ready to come out and wanted to make a soundtrack for it.
