After some delays caused by COVID, a supernatural tip is finally around the corner. Luckily for us, we’re not living in the upcoming Jordan Peel film, which brings that gruesome myth to life. Instead, the creators wrote Candyman of getting Out and directed by Nia DaCosta.
The apartment is located on the former Cabrini Green housing development site – a real estate that was demolished in 2011 – which, as the film summary shows, was “terrorized by word of mouth about a supernatural assassin with a ghost story.” Hook, quickly summoned by them. Who dared to repeat his name five times in the mirror.
By the time McCoy and Cartwright settled in, it was a decade since the project was demolished. Still, after a former resident of Cabrini Green uncovered the true story behind the myth, McCoy became obsessed with exploring horror stories as inspiration for his paintings.
As seen in the newly released trailer, what unfolds is the unraveling of McCoy’s mind and a wave of sickening violence… Tony Todd and Vanessa Estelle Williams play in the original Candyman, ready to reprise their roles in Peele’s supernatural Sword.
As IndieWire reports, DaCosta previously drew parallels between Candyman and real-life events. “In the real world, we constantly make monsters out of men,” he said. “People are killed, and they become saints, or they are insulted. So he kept coming back to this truth for the past year and a half. “
“Horror is a very effective tool for telling stories about things that affect us socially,” he continued. “The objective function is to make you uncomfortable, and I think if that discomfort is related to research on race or gender, then you need to balance your feelings about race and gender.
The film was initially scheduled to hit theaters in June 2020 but has been delayed by a year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It will now be awarded on August 27th. You can watch the trailer below.
