WhatsApp has announced a new “Strict Account Settings” option designed to protect users from sophisticated cyber threats that exploit operating system vulnerabilities. The feature, powered by Meta’s latest data security advances, will limit contact requests and reduce potential attack vectors through shared files.
The messaging platform emphasized that while end-to-end encryption provides baseline protection, certain users—including journalists and public-facing figures—require additional safeguards against rare, highly sophisticated cyberattacks.
Enhanced Protection Against Media-Based Threats
The primary function of Strict Account Settings is to block media links and attachments from people not in your contacts. This addresses the longstanding “Stagefright” vulnerability, discovered in 2015, which allows malicious actors to bypass app-level protections by exploiting media processing systems within the operating system itself.
WhatsApp explained that while seemingly benign files like images or videos can hide sophisticated malware, these specially crafted attachments might target unpatched vulnerabilities in OS libraries or applications. By restricting media from unknown contacts, users significantly reduce their exposure to such threats.
Rolling Out With Rust Technology
WhatsApp has also implemented Rust, a programming language designed to enhance security behind the scenes. This additional layer helps protect photos, videos, and messages from spyware and other threats, allowing users to communicate with greater confidence.
While the feature introduces restrictions on attachment sharing, WhatsApp maintains that the trade-off is worthwhile for users seeking maximum security. The Strict Account Settings option is rolling out gradually over the coming weeks and can be enabled through Settings > Privacy > Advanced.
Users should remain cautious about opening attachments from unknown sources regardless, but this new feature provides an extra layer of protection for those who prioritize security above all else.
