Instagram is preparing to charge users for greater access to its artificial intelligence tools, according to a recent statement from the platform’s chief, Adam Mosseri. During a weekly Q&A session on Instagram Stories, Mosseri addressed a user’s question about usage limits on Meta’s generative AI features for image and video creation, confirming that a subscription-based model is on the way.
Why Meta Is Shifting Its AI Strategy
Mosseri explained that running these AI models comes with steep operational costs, which is why the company currently offers them for free but caps daily usage. He said Meta is working on allowing users to subscribe for expanded access in the near future. Once users hit their daily limit, they’re currently prompted to consider a paid plan to keep using the tools. This move builds on Instagram’s recent Instagram Plus add-on subscription, though that package doesn’t yet include dedicated AI features. The company has already begun restricting usage of effects powered by its Muse image model, signaling the groundwork for tighter monetization ahead.
Broader Push Toward Paid AI Access
The shift isn’t limited to Instagram. Meta’s newer Meta One subscription bundle already offers unlimited use of Conversation Focus, a feature for Meta AI glasses, while non-subscribers are capped at three hours of usage per month. These changes reflect Meta’s broader effort to build sustainable revenue streams as it continues investing heavily in AI development. Mosseri acknowledged that while Meta wants to keep as many features free as possible, mounting server costs are forcing tough decisions between throttling access or introducing fees.
