Instagram is preparing to move its artificial intelligence tools behind a paywall, according to confirmation from the platform’s chief executive. Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri confirmed that IG users will have to pay for access to future in-app AI tools during his regular Instagram Stories Q&A session, responding to a user question about usage restrictions on the app’s generative AI features for images and video.
Why Meta Is Introducing the Change
Mosseri explained that these AI models are costly to operate, which is why the company currently offers them free but caps how many times users can access them each day. He added that a subscription option allowing expanded access is currently in development. Once users hit their daily limit, they are prompted to subscribe in order to keep using the tools.
Broader Push Toward Paid AI Tiers
This shift builds on Instagram’s recently launched Instagram Plus add-on package, which does not yet include dedicated AI features, though restrictions already apply to effects powered by Meta’s Muse image model. Separately, Meta’s new Meta One subscription bundle offers unlimited use of its Conversation Focus feature for paying users of Meta AI glasses, while non-subscribers are capped at three hours of use per month.
The moves reflect Meta’s broader strategy of shifting some AI infrastructure costs onto consumers as it continues heavy investment in AI development. Mosseri acknowledged that while Meta would prefer to keep features free, rising server costs eventually force the company to either limit usage or charge for it.
While speculation about eventual AI paywalls on Instagram has circulated for some time, this marks the clearest confirmation yet that paid tiers are on the way. It remains unclear whether the change will boost Meta’s revenue or dampen engagement with its AI features.
