Instagram Tests New Algorithm Control Features for Users

Instagram is expanding its algorithm control options with four new experimental features designed to give users greater influence over their feed recommendations. Chief Adam Mosseri announced that the company is testing multiple access points to the “Your Algorithm” panel, making it easier for users to signal which content they prefer.

New Access Points Coming to Instagram

The tests include several user-friendly additions. First, users will be able to drag down from the home screen to quickly access the Your Algorithm panel, where they can add or remove topics. Instagram is also considering inserting direct topic control options between Reels in-stream, and adding lower function bar controls that let users easily indicate interest levels in recommended content.

Conversational AI to Refine Recommendations

Perhaps most notably, Instagram is experimenting with conversational prompts that allow users to refine recommendations through dialogue rather than manually selecting topics. Mosseri stated the goal is to make the algorithm “feel like something you talk to rather than something that happens to you,” representing a shift toward more interactive AI personalization.

However, industry analysts note limitations to these initiatives. While the expanded controls provide helpful options, they don’t address a key user request: a chronological feed showing only followed accounts. Additionally, research suggests most users won’t actively engage with these tools, treating them more as reassurance than practical controls.

Meta remains unlikely to fully empower users in ways that reduce engagement metrics. Still, these algorithm control experiments represent another step toward giving users more agency over their Instagram experience, even if adoption remains uncertain.
