Instagram has given creators another way to polish their multi-slide posts by bringing carousel editing tools to its Edits app. Best known as a video editor, Edits now lets users build and refine carousels with the same creative features. The update offers a fresh canvas for designing eye-catching, thumb-stopping sequences that make people stop scrolling.
What the New Tools Offer
Creators can drop photos and videos into the editor, experiment with different layouts, and reuse the fonts and text styles already available in Edits. They can also cut out their own stickers and apply overlays and effects across their content. Instagram describes the update as bringing the best of the Edits experience to a new format for creative ideas, giving carousel makers a much wider toolkit than before.
The move reflects the platform’s continued focus on carousels, which have proven strong performers. Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in 2024 that carousels can lift engagement and reach, because extra slides keep people in the feed longer. The app also re-shows carousels to followers who return, starting from the second slide, which gives the format added exposure. Buffer’s research last year found that carousels earn roughly 12% more engagement per post than single-image updates.
Availability and What’s Next
The carousel editor is live on the iOS version of Edits, with an Android rollout expected soon. It follows recent updates that let users rearrange slides and add captions to individual posts within a carousel. Together, these changes show Instagram steadily building out the format.
For brands and social media managers, the expanded toolkit means more creative freedom, but also more decisions to weigh when planning content. With more design options available, standing out will depend less on access to tools and more on how well creators use them to tell a clear, engaging story.
