Instagram Updates Its Reels Guide With Fresh Creation Tips

Instagram has published an updated Instagram Reels guide, offering creators a refresher on creative options, editing features and ways to expand reach. The guide is part of the platform’s “Tips and Tricks” series, which aims to explain how different tools work and encourage more people to try them.

Instagram explained that Reels can run anywhere from three seconds to three minutes, with each length suited to a different purpose. Clips of three to 15 seconds work well for quick transitions, trends and punchy one-liners. Videos of 15 to 60 seconds are described as the sweet spot for tutorials and day-in-my-life content, while longer formats of up to three minutes suit storytelling, walkthroughs and detailed how-tos. Users can also turn multiple still photos into a slideshow-style Reel.

Text Overlays and Captions Serve Different Roles

The guide highlights how text overlays can emphasize a specific detail or create a hook that stops viewers mid-scroll. Instagram also stresses the accessibility value of captions, recommending creators include them even when overlays are already in place. As the company put it, overlays spotlight chosen moments, while captions make the entire spoken audio visible, so the two features complement each other.

Editing Controls and Distribution

Instagram also points to several editing tools, including playback speed options, a video timer for hands-free recording and alignment tools that help create smoother transitions.

On distribution, the company noted that high-performing Reels can appear on the Explore page, where millions of people discover new accounts each day. This, Instagram said, is a key difference between Reels and Stories, since Reels are built to reach beyond a creator’s existing followers. To improve the odds of being recommended, content should be high-quality, original and engaging from the first second.

While the guide contains no major new announcements and is aimed largely at a general audience, it serves as a useful reminder of core features. Reels now account for more than 50% of all user time spent on Instagram, making it the platform’s most engaging surface.
