Meta Cuts 8,000 Jobs and Reassigns 7,000 Staff to AI Roles

Meta is reshaping its workforce in one of its most significant organizational overhauls yet, cutting around 8,000 staff while reassigning 7,000 employees to work on AI initiatives as the social media giant accelerates its bet on artificial intelligence.

Employees will be moved into four new organizations built around AI tools and apps, operating with fewer managers per employee than other parts of the company — a structure Meta is calling “AI native design.”

AI Takes Over Human Roles

The layoffs are not simply a cost-cutting exercise. Many of the eliminated positions are expected to be taken over by AI tools and systems rather than replaced by human workers, signaling a fundamental shift in how Meta intends to operate going forward. The company is investing hundreds of billions into AI development as it seeks to lead the way on the rapidly evolving technology.

This restructuring follows a pattern of earlier workforce reductions. In January, Meta cut 10% of staff from its Reality Labs division, a move widely seen as a step away from its once-ambitious metaverse project as AI gained momentum.

Zuckerberg’s AI Vision

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been vocal about AI’s potential to replace certain human roles. In an interview with Joe Rogan in January 2025, he predicted that Meta and similar companies would develop AI capable of functioning as a mid-level software engineer by the end of that year. Zuckerberg has even been training an AI agent on his own day-to-day workflow and decision-making processes.

Meta’s workforce transformation represents one of the clearest real-world examples yet of a major tech company replacing human labor with AI at significant scale, and the industry will be watching closely to see whether it pays off.
