Meta Leads Global Social Media Reach in 2026
Meta continues to dominate the social media landscape, with Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp each surpassing 3 billion monthly users. Instagram was the latest to cross this threshold, hitting the milestone in September 2025, following WhatsApp’s achievement in early 2025 and Facebook’s in 2023.
Meta’s Overall Numbers Show a Slight Dip
Despite these individual milestones, Meta no longer breaks out platform-specific data in quarterly reports, instead sharing a combined total across its app family. That figure stood at 3.56 billion in the first quarter of 2026 — a small decline from the prior quarter and the company’s first-ever drop in reported users. Even with the dip, close to a third of the world’s population still engages with at least one Meta platform monthly. Messenger adds another 1.3 billion active users, while Threads has climbed to 500 million just one month after launch milestones were shared.
YouTube, TikTok, and Rising Platforms Round Out the Field
YouTube trails Meta with roughly 2.7 billion monthly users, according to third-party estimates, and has seen a dramatic surge in Shorts viewership, jumping from about 30 billion daily views in 2022 to around 200 billion in 2026. TikTok’s official figures remain frozen at one billion users since 2021, though outside estimates put the number closer to 1.6 billion, with regional restrictions potentially capping further growth.
Snapchat is nearing its own billion-user milestone at 956 million, fueled largely by expansion in India, while Pinterest has quietly grown to 631 million monthly users. X and Threads are running close, with X reporting 550 million monthly users. Reddit and LinkedIn, meanwhile, report activity differently, with LinkedIn’s active user base estimated near 416 million based on its EU engagement data.
