Social media engagement has shifted dramatically over the past five years. The rise of short-form video and algorithm-driven recommendations has turned platforms once built for connecting with friends and family into entertainment destinations. For marketers, that shift means old tactics — simple posts with a few hashtags — no longer capture attention the way they used to.
A Framework Built on Recurring Content
Mondo Metrics founder Nick Cicero, who has spent two decades studying social media metrics and optimization, has proposed a new approach for brands navigating this landscape. His central argument is that success no longer comes from posting volume or fast trend adoption. Instead, brands must treat “the recurring content property” as their most valuable asset, building formats audiences recognize and return to repeatedly.
Cicero says that consistent packaging, familiar talent, and structural repetition help audiences form lasting relationships with a brand, much like they would with a favorite show.
Four Pillars of the Strategy
The framework breaks down into four components: Territory, the broad subject area a brand wants to own in audiences’ minds; Message, the core value proposition tied to real audience needs; Format, a repeatable content structure such as an interview series or explainer segment; and Hook, the opening element that draws viewers in, paired with consistent follow-through to build community.
Cicero recommends marketers use this structure as a guiding framework, shifting toward an entertainment mindset while staying anchored to brand pillars. As social platforms continue prioritizing entertainment over connection, brands that build recognizable, repeatable content properties are best positioned to earn habitual engagement rather than one-off views.
