Morgan Gibbs-White’s deflected first-half strike proved enough for Nottingham Forest to eliminate FC Porto 2-1 on aggregate at the City Ground on Thursday night. The goal came in the 16th minute after Neco Williams robbed Alberto Costa, with Gibbs-White’s shot deflecting past goalkeeper Diogo Costa. In a moving tribute, Forest players celebrated by holding up the No.8 shirt of absent teammate Elliot Anderson, who missed the match following the death of his mother.
Red Card Changes the Tie
Porto’s Jan Bednarek was shown a straight red card in the eighth minute for a dangerous challenge on striker Chris Wood, reducing the visitors to ten men and fundamentally shifting the contest. Despite the numerical advantage, Forest struggled to kill the tie off, with Igor Jesus squandering three clear-cut chances. Porto came agonisingly close to levelling when William Gomes rattled the underside of the bar late in the game.
Injury Crisis Threatens Forest’s Dual Ambitions
The victory came at a painful cost. Wood, Murillo, and substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi all left the field injured, with Hudson-Odoi departing on crutches. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo will now anxiously assess the damage ahead of a critical Premier League run-in, with Forest sitting just three points above the relegation zone.
Forest will face Aston Villa in the semi-finals, reviving a storied rivalry between two former European Cup winners. The final is scheduled for Istanbul on May 20, with a Champions League place awaiting the winner.
