Instagram is preparing to charge users for access to its artificial intelligence features, according to comments from head of Instagram Adam Mosseri during a recent Q&A session on Instagram Stories. Responding to a question about usage limits on Meta’s AI-powered image and video tools, Mosseri explained that the high cost of running these models is pushing the company toward a subscription-based approach.
Free Access Comes With Daily Limits
Mosseri noted that Instagram currently tries to offer AI tools at no cost, but caps daily usage because running the models is expensive, leaving the company to either throttle usage or charge for it. He added that a subscription option granting expanded access is in development. Users who hit the current daily cap on Meta’s Muse-powered image effects are already being prompted to subscribe in order to keep using the tools.
Part of a Broader Monetization Push
This move fits into a wider pattern at Meta, which recently rolled out an Instagram Plus add-on subscription — though that package does not yet include dedicated AI features. Separately, Meta’s newer Meta One subscription offers unlimited access to its Conversation Focus tool for paying users of its AI glasses, while non-subscribers are restricted to a limited number of monthly usage hours.
Together, these steps signal Meta’s gradual pivot toward consumer-funded AI, as the company looks for new revenue streams to help offset its massive and growing AI infrastructure spending. Mosseri acknowledged the tension in his Q&A, saying Meta would rather keep features free where possible, but that server costs eventually force trade-offs.
As generative AI becomes more embedded across Instagram’s tools, users should expect clearer paywalls separating basic and premium AI functionality in the months ahead.
