The announcement comes at a time of strained relations between Harry and the British royal family, amid allegations of mistreatment of his wife Megan and shocking royal and couple racism in the United States last year.
According to British media, this is the first time a high-ranking British monarch has written such a book.”I’m not writing this as the prince I was born into, but as a person I am,” Prince Harry said in a statement from Penguin Random House.
“I’ve worn many hats over the years, literally and figuratively, and I hope that by telling my story – ups and downs, mistakes, lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common. “I’m so thankful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned so far in my life, and I love seeing people read firsthand a story about my life that is both accurate and completely true.”
The New York publishing giant unveiled the plans on Twitter, describing the book – slated for late next year – as “an intimate and heartfelt reminder of one of the most interesting and influential personalities of our time.”
The book covers his childhood – Harry was only 12 years old when his mother, Prince Diana, died in a car crash in Paris and his military service, which included two tours of Afghanistan. According to the publisher, the “portrait of an honest and charming person” should also tell of “the joy he found as a husband and father,” according to the publisher.
Harry, 36, and Megan, 39, sat down for a surprise interview with American talk show host Oprah Winfrey in March, sparking the royal family’s biggest crisis in decades. During the two-hour session, which was watched by more than 17 million people in the United States and more than 11 million in the UK, Harry and Megan said racism played a role in leaving the UK.
The couple said a senior king guessed how dark their baby’s skin was before it was born. Megan’s mother is black also her father is white. Their first child, Archie, is now two years old, while Harry and Megan announced the birth of their daughter Lilibet Diana last month, named after Harry’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and his late mother.
According to British media reports, the book was written under the ghost of J. R. Möhringer – the Pulitzer Prize winner, who previously co-wrote the autobiography of Andre Agassi.
