Reckless Driving in Dubai: Influencer’s Antics Draw Criticism and Legal Scrutiny

A Russian TikTok influencer is facing backlash after being filmed engaging in reckless behavior on Dubai roads

The video, shared by a Canadian-American group known for prank videos and vlogs, depicts the influencer playfully taking control of the steering wheel and performing maneuvers while capturing the antics on his iPhone.

Legal and Safety Concerns

Thomas Edelmann, Managing Director of RoadSafetyUAE, emphasized that the influencer’s actions not only violate several UAE laws but also contribute to dangerous road conditions. Distracted driving, including the use of mobile phones, is a leading cause of fatal accidents in the UAE, with 60% of accident victims reported to have died due to non-use of seat belts.

Consequences for Violations

In the UAE, driving without a license can result in imprisonment for up to three months and a fine of at least Dh6,000. Not wearing a seatbelt carries a fine of Dh400, while using a cellphone while driving may lead to a fine of Dh800. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, warned of the severe consequences of using a phone while driving, citing the increased likelihood of accidents.

Call for Responsible Influencer Behavior

Edelmann condemned the influencer’s actions, describing them as both despicable and a criminal offense. He stressed the need for influencers to use their reach to promote responsible behavior and adherence to traffic laws. Despite an asterisk in the video indicating that some stunts were performed on a closed track, the overall behavior was criticized as inexcusable and detrimental to road safety.

The incident highlights the importance of promoting safe driving practices and discouraging irresponsible behavior, especially among individuals with a significant online following.
