Snapchat Brings Back Classic 2D Bitmoji for Premium Users

Snapchat is responding to user requests by reintroducing its classic 2D Bitmoji characters. The platform has launched Comic Bitmoji, a new style that brings back the nostalgic comic-book aesthetic while maintaining the benefits of today’s 3D infrastructure. The feature is now rolling out to Snapchat+ subscribers, allowing users to toggle between the traditional 2D look and modern 3D avatars.

From Bitstrips to Modern Avatars

The move marks a significant shift in Snapchat’s approach to user customization. Bitmoji characters, originally 2D comic-style avatars created through the Bitstrips app, became wildly popular on Facebook before Snapchat acquired the platform in 2016. In 2021, Snapchat introduced 3D Bitmoji, which expanded interactive possibilities and enabled digital fashion products. Despite this evolution, approximately 100,000 users signed a change.org petition requesting the return of the original 2D format.

A Win for Snapchat+ Subscribers

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel personally acknowledged the petition, announcing that Comic Bitmoji would function as a “filter for your avatar,” delivering the same customization and expressions with a comic-inspired reimagined look. The feature leverages existing 3D infrastructure, suggesting minimal development investment while potentially boosting Snapchat+ subscription engagement.

The company’s willingness to accommodate user preferences demonstrates responsive product development. With 2.7 billion Bitmoji avatars created and 320 million daily active users, this feature serves a niche audience but strengthens user loyalty among paying subscribers. For Snapchat+ members, Comic Bitmoji offers a nostalgic escape while maintaining modern functionality—a strategic move that honors user feedback without requiring substantial resource allocation.
