Snapchat Cracks Down on AI-Generated Spotlight Content

Snapchat has announced a significant update to its Spotlight feed algorithm, moving to limit the reach of fully AI-generated videos on the platform. The company said the change reflects its ongoing effort to make Spotlight a space where original, human creativity is favored over mass-produced synthetic content.

Human Content Takes Priority

Under the new system, videos created entirely by artificial intelligence will no longer qualify for recommendation on Spotlight. Snapchat clarified that the goal isn’t to eliminate AI entirely, but to prevent repetitive, low-effort AI content—often dubbed “AI slop”—from degrading the browsing experience. Clips edited or enhanced using Snapchat’s own AI creative tools will still be eligible for recommendation, and the app will continue labeling AI-assisted content with transparency markers so viewers know what they’re watching.

A Contrast to Meta’s Approach

The move stands in sharp contrast to Meta’s strategy with its Vibes app, launched in February, which serves users an entire feed built from AI-generated content. While Meta has framed the app as a new outlet for creative expression and engagement, Snapchat’s decision suggests its own users have pushed back against synthetic content flooding their feeds.

The shift raises broader questions about how audiences are responding to AI-generated media across social platforms. It remains too early to gauge AI’s long-term acceptance, since the underlying tools are still rapidly improving. But for now, Snapchat’s update points to a growing wariness among users—and a possible turning point where platforms feel pressured to rein in AI content to protect engagement and trust.
