Snapchat Shuts Down Standalone Bitmoji App by June 2026

Snapchat has announced it will shut down its standalone Bitmoji application on June 30, 2026, pushing all avatar-related features into the main Snapchat experience. The move signals a broader effort by Snap Inc. to consolidate its platforms and cut operational costs as it gears up for the highly anticipated launch of its augmented reality glasses.

Snap acquired Bitmoji creator Bitstrips back in 2016, weaving its cartoon avatar system into the heart of the Snapchat ecosystem. Over the years, Bitmoji grew into a cultural staple, with more than 2.7 billion avatars created and 320 million daily active users engaging with the characters. Despite the app’s retirement, Bitmoji itself is far from dead.

What Happens to Your Bitmoji?

Users can continue enjoying Bitmoji stickers, fashion, and keyboard features through the Snapchat app. Depending on their device, they may also access Bitmoji via a Snapchat keyboard extension or an iMessage extension on iOS. Snap has assured users that linking their existing Bitmoji data to Snapchat will keep their digital characters intact.

Bitmoji Still Going Strong Inside Snapchat

Despite the shutdown, Snap has been doubling down on Bitmoji features within its core app. Recent months have seen the return of fan-favourite 2D Bitmoji characters following a 100,000-signature petition, a new AI-powered Bitmoji Lens for paid users, and the launch of “Bitmoji Plaza” — a virtual town where users interact as their avatar counterparts.

The retirement of the separate app reflects smart resource management rather than a declining interest in Bitmoji, as Snap refocuses energy where its users already are.
