Stephen Curry speaks to The News ahead of his “Bucket List” concert hosting ESPY 2022 in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.
Stephen Curry will host ESPYS on Wednesday, a commitment the basketball star described as a “bucket list situation.”
Curry, 34, told the news: “I’ve looked at the entire roster of athletes and celebrities who have hosted the show before, and I’ve seen them come out with a bit of fun and entertainment, sticking to their personalities and taking risks.”
Luckily for the NBA Finals MVP, some of his friends hosted the awards ceremony. “I’ve been talking to Drake and Peyton Manning about homesteading, so obviously I’m nervous and excited, and I have all kinds of emotions,” Curry said.
He’s also planning several special appearances – including a potential one with his wife, Ayesha Curry.
“I don’t want to break too many surprises,” he teased. “We could try to get [Ayesha] in some skit or some stage stuff … we’ll see,” Curry said. New this year, the Golden State Warriors star also Ayesha co-hosted HBO Max’s About Last Night. He told the News in January that his favorite part about hosting the show is doing it with his wife.
In addition to hosting the awards show, Curry was nominated for three of his ESPYS – Best news Player, Best Male Athlete, and Best Record Achievement. “We’ll see what happens,” he said. But Curry had hope pinned on the NBA MVP award. At 34, he is the oldest candidate, follow by Joel Embiid at 28, Nikola Jokic at 27, and Luka Doncic at 23.
“We have so many young people making progress and doing amazing things,” Curry told the News. “I want to win this category and add it to this year’s championship glory, but we’ll see what happens,” he added.
Given the opportunity to nominate an NBA player other than himself to host a future ESPY, Curry said, “Oh, Draymond [Green], of course. It’s going to be a seven-hour show.”
