Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has delivered a stinging assessment of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s controversial departure from Anfield, insisting he would never have made the same decision during his playing career.
The academy graduate turned down a new contract offer last season before completing a £10 million transfer to Real Madrid, a move that sparked significant backlash from the Liverpool faithful. Speaking candidly on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Gerrard, who remained loyal to his boyhood club until his mid-30s, expressed disappointment with Alexander-Arnold’s choice.
“I wouldn’t have done it,” said the former England captain, who has been without a managerial role since departing Saudi Arabian club Al Ettifaq in January. “I just think he took a big risk on.”
Praise Tempered with Concern
Despite his criticism, Gerrard acknowledged Alexander-Arnold’s exceptional abilities, comparing him to some of England’s greatest midfield talents. “He’s an extremely good footballer, a very talented footballer. One of the best passers I’ve ever seen,” Gerrard explained. “He’s in the conversation with Beckham and Scholes, no problem.”
However, the 44-year-old questioned the timing of the move, suggesting Alexander-Arnold departed during what should have been his peak years at Liverpool. “To leave Liverpool where he was in his prime years, getting offered a new contract, he took a risk on. He’s living that risk now.”
Understanding the Allure of Madrid
Gerrard admitted that removing emotional attachment makes the decision more understandable, referencing his own experience with Real Madrid interest during Jose Mourinho’s tenure. “If I take my Liverpool hat off, I think any player in the game when Barcelona and Real Madrid come, it’s going to turn your head,” he conceded.
Despite expressing hope for Alexander-Arnold’s success in Spain, Gerrard’s comments underscore the complex relationship between player ambition and club loyalty in modern football.
