Along with Carson Wentz, safety Bobby McCain has also been release by the Commanders.
Wentz was acquire by the Commanders in an offseason trade with the Indianapolis Colts last year. During his time with the NFC East team, he played in eight games, starting in seven. He complete 62.3 percent of his passes for a total of 1,755 yards, scoring 11 touchdowns but also throwing nine interceptions. Wentz was force to sit out of the game after breaking his finger during the match against the Chicago Bears in the middle of the season.
According to the Commanders’ official release, the team believe that Wentz’s veteran experience could help push the team to the playoffs. After missing more than half of the season with his injury, the team decided to release him. The move will save the Commanders $26.17 million against its salary cap.

Meanwhile, with Wentz’s exit, Sam Howell and Taylor Heinicke are the remaining quarterbacks on the team, with Heinicke schedule to be a free agent in March. Commanders coach Ron Rivera has stated that Howell will start as the team’s top quarterback in the offseason. He will need to continue to prove himself and earn his position.
McCain, who had been with the Commanders since 2021, has also been released by the team. He played in 34 games, starting in 32 and record 139 tackles and four interceptions during his time with the team.
