Cardi B spoke to girls in a police mentorship program on Friday (February 24), as part of what she describes. As an eye-opening also emotional week of court-mandated community service for her role in two brawls at New York City strip clubs in 2018.
The 30-year-old “Bodak Yellow” singer attended an NYPD “Girls Talk” event at the police training academy in Queens also shared her “rags to riches story,” according to the department. She posed for photos and danced with teenagers.
Cardi B’s plea agreement calls for her to complete 15 days of community service by March 1 to avoid a 15-day jail sentence.
“I feel like there are so many people that probably make y’all feel like, ‘This is what’s cool. This is what’s going on, this is what it takes to be lit, this is what it takes to be fire,'” Cardi B told her young audience.
“Sometimes, like on a girl, that’s a little peer pressure. Please don’t fall for it. Do you understand what I mean? Be great, for example. Be you. You’re incredible. You’re dope on your own.”
The NYPD shared a video on Twitter of the event’s highlights.
Some, including a retired police lieutenant, questioned whether Cardi B was an appropriate role model for children given her sometimes provocative lyrics, criminal record. And previous admission that she drugged and robbed men while working as a stripper before becoming famous.
Cardi B, real name Belcalis Almanzar, is a New York City native who has been documenting her community service on Twitter all week. “Community service has been the best thing that has happened to me,” she wrote on Saturday.
She compared the experience to a spiritual journey that sometimes left her in tears. “Those people we leave behind just need someone to talk to also a little push, and YOU might be able to change their lives.”
