TikTok is doubling down on its micro-drama ambitions, announcing a new scriptwriting program in partnership with the Sundance Institute to train the next generation of short-form storytellers. The initiative signals a major push by the platform to professionalise a format that has rapidly become one of digital entertainment’s most lucrative categories.
The four-week live online course will focus on scriptwriting for micro-series, equipping creators with the tools, frameworks, and industry knowledge needed to develop serialised, story-driven content for digital audiences. Participants will be selected based on their existing work on TikTok and their interest in micro-drama development. Applications are now open globally through the Sundance Collab website.
A Billion-Dollar Format Goes Mainstream
The timing of the program reflects just how significant the micro-drama space has become. The serialised, soap opera-style format generated $1.3 billion in the United States alone in 2025, primarily through direct payments from viewers — a figure that has drawn serious attention from platforms and investors alike.
TikTok has been strategically expanding its foothold in this space. The platform launched a dedicated Minis section last year and rolled out PineDrama, a standalone mini-drama app, in both the U.S. and Brazil in early 2026.
Why the Sundance Partnership Matters
Aligning with the Sundance Institute lends the program significant credibility. The institute is widely respected for nurturing emerging filmmaking talent, and its involvement suggests TikTok is positioning micro-dramas not just as viral content, but as a legitimate creative medium.
For creators, the program represents a concrete opportunity to build storytelling skills and monetise them — arriving at a moment when demand for compelling short-form narratives has never been higher.
