Matthew Lani, a prominent South African TikTok star known for sharing medical advice, has been released after being arrested on allegations of impersonating a doctor.
Lani, who gained thousands of followers, was detained when attempting to enter a hospital wearing a surgical mask and stethoscope. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) stated that there is currently “no evidence” to charge Lani with impersonation or misrepresentation but mentioned ongoing investigations. Lani’s lawyer emphasized that his actions were for entertainment, and without a complainant stating he consulted as a doctor, they argued there is no case against him.
Controversial TikTok Star’s Legal Journey
Matthew Lani faced scrutiny over his qualifications after claiming to hold a medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand, which the institution denied. The Department of Education also indicated that Lani lacks a school-leaving certificate. The arrest followed a manhunt, and Lani’s attempt to mislead authorities by using the identity of Dr. Sanele Zingelwa, a legitimate medical intern, resulted in fraud accusations from Dr. Zingelwa. Lani’s case highlights the broader issue of individuals impersonating doctors in South Africa, with approximately 124 such arrests reported by the Ministry of Health over the last three years.
Ongoing Investigations and Future Decisions
The NPA clarified that while there is no current evidence for charges, further investigations are underway. The results will determine whether criminal proceedings should be instituted against Lani. The controversy has led to the closure of Lani’s original TikTok account, although he has since opened a new one with a substantial following.
