Tom Brady opens up about a tough week in a first post-divorce press conference

Tom Brady spoke at Thursday’s press conference for the first time since his divorce from Gisele Bundchen and answered questions about his difficult personal week.

Ahead of Sunday’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers game against the Los Angeles Rams, Brady, 45, was asked, “how were the last few days, the last few weeks” for him at his weekly press conference on Thursday.

Brady first referred to his Instagram post announcing their breakup, then said he was trying to “do the best” he could with the team and at home. “I always try to do my best here, and when I go here, I try to do my best, and we all try,” he said. “I’m sure everyone sitting in this room sitting at home just trying to wake up every day and do what’s best for their families and careers, and I’m no different.”

“So try to do your best every day, and I’m certainly no different.”

Brady first discussed the breakup on Instagram shortly after PEOPLE confirmed that he and Bundchen would be filing for divorce on October 28.

The father-of-three added that their children “will continue to be the center of our world in every way. Brady said separation from his wife was “naturally painful and difficult, as it is for many people around the world who go through the same thing every day.”

“However, we wish only the best for each other as we pursue a new chapter in our lives that has yet to be written.” We ask for privacy and respect as we wait in the days and weeks ahead. Monday’s episode of his Sirius XM show Let’s Go!

“I think there are a lot of working professionals in life who live the things they handle at work and home,” he said. “The good news, of course, is that it is an amicable situation. And I am focused on two things, taking care of my family and, of course, my children and both doing my best job to win football games.
