A self-proclaimed “engineer” on TikTok, known as Kala, gained fame for constructing a tunnel system 22 feet below her Virginia home.
With a following of over 530,000 on TikTok, she showcased her project, stacking cinder blocks and welding metal in the underground tunnel. However, the town of Herndon issued a stop-work order, urging her to obtain the necessary permits for the storm shelter. Despite TikTok warnings and concerns from neighbors about potential risks, Kala expressed confidence in obtaining the required approvals for her passion project.
Neighbors Express Concerns Over Safety
While Kala’s unconventional construction methods and lack of safety measures raised concerns among neighbors, some found the situation amusing. Concerns were raised about potential damage to surrounding properties and the overall safety of the tunnel. Despite TikTok flags advising against attempting similar actions, Kala faced criticism for not securing permits beforehand, given the scale of the project.
Herndon Town’s Response and Ongoing Inspections
The town of Herndon confirmed that they received notice of potential building code violations related to Kala’s project. Representatives from building officials and zoning administrators conducted an inspection as part of the protocol. The town emphasized working with the property owner to address any violations, ensuring compliance with safety codes. The situation has sparked interest and discussions both locally and on social media platforms.
