How did it start?

Ted Lasso was born of an elegantly written joke. In 2013, Sudeikis, who finished a successful decade on Saturday Night Live. Created a video for NBC Sports to help the network promote new coverage of English Premier League football matches. 

Dressed in Sudeikis, the proud Kansan is like Ted Lasso, a Midwestern soccer coach who has just been recruited to run the real Tottenham Hotspur club. Gags wrote it himself. The football game could end in a relationship, Lasso said. If it happened in American football, “this could be cited in Revelation as the cause of the apocalypse.”

After his second ESPN Lasso promotion went viral in 2014, the actor, encouraged by his then-wife, British actress and director Olivia Wilde. And his longtime friend and current co-star, Brendan, came up with the idea for a series based on the Lasso. Hunt. The tweak show debuted in August 2020, a welcome antidote to the looming pandemic.

Who are the players?

Sudeikis and coach Hunt have taken on a fictional English team called AFC Richmond, whose recently divorced owner Rebecca Welton (Waddingham) is secretly seeking Lasso’s alleged inability to torpedo the team’s football back to their former swell. But guess again.
