X is rolling out comment downvotes once again, this time with a clearer purpose: fixing what the platform’s own head of product called the worst feature on the site. Nikita Bier announced the test on Wednesday, revealing a new thumbs-down icon appearing on post replies. Users who tap it can select from five reasons — including spam, misleading content, and AI-generated posts — giving X richer data to sort its reply feed.
A Reply Algorithm in Crisis
Bier was candid about the scale of the problem, describing the current reply ranking system as having no logic or meaningful signals, with crypto spam routinely surfacing at the top of threads. The downvote feature is designed to feed the algorithm better data, helping X surface more relevant replies while pushing junk further down. Importantly, downvotes will not reduce a post’s like count, keeping the feature focused on ranking rather than public shaming.
