X has introduced a new audio feature for long-form articles published on its platform, powered by xAI’s Grok artificial intelligence. Articles now display a “Listen” button in-stream, allowing users to hear an AI-voiced reading of the content. The feature supports background playback, meaning listeners can continue hearing articles even while switching between apps.
A Tool Built for Creators
The addition is part of X’s broader strategy to attract content creators and encourage more exclusive, in-depth posting on the platform. Combined with recently updated creator subscription tools, the audio feature gives long-form writers a new way to expand their audience — turning readers into listeners and potentially growing their follower base in the process.
X has a clear incentive beyond creator satisfaction. Longer, well-researched articles provide richer data for training its xAI systems, particularly Grok, which relies on X’s real-time content to deliver up-to-date responses. Human engagement signals like likes and shares further enhance the value of that data as a learning source.
X Articles Are Already Surging
X appears to be gaining momentum on the long-form content front. According to X’s head of product Nikita Bier, X Articles have grown 18 times over just the past three months. While a $1 million prize for the top-performing January article likely boosted those numbers, the platform is clearly building incentive structures designed to keep high-quality, original content flowing.
The Grok-powered audio feature is the latest step in that effort, and it signals X’s growing ambition to position itself as a serious home for deep, creator-driven content.
