X Launches Starter Packs Feature for New User Discovery

X is finally joining the discovery trend with its new “Starterpacks” feature, which aims to help new users find relevant creators and accounts to follow. The platform compiled top posters across various niches and countries to create curated starter packs that simplify the onboarding experience for fresh users.

Catching Up to Bluesky’s Innovation

The starter packs concept was originally popularized by Bluesky in 2024, where it became a key tool for helping users transition between platforms by discovering niche communities. While X’s version comes later, it serves the same fundamental purpose: reducing friction in the early user experience by connecting new members with established voices in their interests.

According to X’s head of product Nikita Bier, the company “scoured the world for the top posters in every niche & country” to compile these collections. The feature is designed to help populate user feeds with relevant content while simultaneously improving X’s algorithm’s understanding of user interests.

Impact on Platform Engagement

This addition addresses a long-standing challenge for X. Twitter acknowledged back in 2015 that discovery difficulties contributed to user growth issues, and the problem persists today. With the average X user viewing only 20-30 posts daily and over 100 million new posts added to the platform each day, improved discovery tools could significantly boost engagement.

Notably, Threads launched its own version of starter packs in December 2024, suggesting this feature is becoming standard across social platforms. X’s starterpacks rollout begins in the coming weeks, with early access available now through the company’s announcement.
