X is inviting creators to reimagine Homer’s The Odyssey using its Grok Imagine AI tools, backing the effort with a total prize pool of $175,000. The top three video submissions will earn $100,000, $50,000, and $25,000 respectively, with entries judged on impressions among Verified Premium subscribers before being evaluated for quality and creativity. Winning entries must run three to five minutes and include at least one minute of English dialogue. Only U.S. users aged 18 and older can participate, and the contest closes on August 31, 2026.
A Response to Nolan’s Film
The initiative appears rooted in X owner Elon Musk’s frustration with Christopher Nolan’s recent film adaptation of the epic. Musk has publicly criticized the director’s casting decisions, accusing him of disrespecting the source material and the Greek people, and has claimed his own AI tools can eventually produce a superior version of the story. Both the original poem and Nolan’s film remain works of fiction rather than historical accounts.
Part of a Broader Pattern
This isn’t the first time X has dangled cash to boost engagement and showcase new features. The platform previously awarded a $1 million prize for its top-performing article and another $1 million for the best AI-generated Super Bowl ad. It also briefly ran a “Certified Bangers” account spotlighting top posts before quietly abandoning it. Critics note these campaigns tend to generate only short-term buzz, with X often losing interest soon after. Even so, the Odyssey contest gives Musk a fresh opportunity to promote Grok’s video capabilities while making a pointed statement about Nolan’s adaptation.
