X Boosts Transparency With New Shadowban Insight Tool

X has introduced new tools aimed at giving users more clarity on how the platform’s algorithm affects the visibility of their posts. The update expands the company’s GitHub code listing and adds a feature allowing users to see whether their account or specific posts have been labeled or restricted in any way. According to X, the goal is to let people determine for themselves whether the platform is limiting their reach and why certain content performs the way it does.

Users Can Now Analyze Their Own Data

The rollout includes a new option for users to download information on any tags or labels applied to their posts over the past month. X VP of Product Keith Coleman noted that people can even feed the platform’s source code and their own account data into an AI model to better understand what’s influencing their visibility. While the process isn’t simple and requires manual effort, it could offer valuable insight for creators enrolled in X’s revenue-sharing program who want to troubleshoot underperforming content.

A History of Mixed Transparency Efforts

This isn’t X’s first attempt at openness. In 2023, shortly after Elon Musk acquired the platform, a partial version of the ranking algorithm was published on GitHub, with promises of regular updates that never materialized. Musk has repeatedly pointed to that release as proof of the platform’s transparency, and last month reiterated plans to fully open-source the codebase again. Whether this latest update signals a more serious commitment remains to be seen, but it does give users new avenues to investigate suspected shadowbans and restrictions. X is currently testing the labeling tool with a randomized group of eligible accounts that are at least a year old, suggesting a broader rollout could follow depending on the results.
