Steven Gerrard has delivered a blunt verdict on Manchester United’s squad, claiming that several players at Old Trafford are not good enough for the club. The Liverpool legend’s list reportedly includes one of his former teammates.
United in Turmoil After Bournemouth Loss
United’s troubles deepened on Sunday when Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford, leaving the Red Devils 16th in the Premier League table. Manager Michael Carrick remains in charge for now, but the results make uncomfortable reading. United have won just one of their last eight top-flight matches and one of three Champions League games this season.
Speculation over Carrick’s future is growing, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann among the names linked with the job should he be dismissed. Gerrard, however, believes the problem lies more with the players on the pitch than the man in the dugout.
Gerrard Picks Out the Standouts
Speaking on Overlap Daily, Gerrard stressed that United do have quality in their ranks. He singled out captain Bruno Fernandes as the club’s best player, saying that even as a Liverpool fan he finds him a pleasure to watch when he is at his best. He described the Portuguese midfielder as a terrific talent.
Gerrard also rates summer signing Bryan Mbeumo and sees real potential in Carlos Baleba. But he went on to name a string of other United players he feels fall short of the standard the club demands.
The comments add to the pressure on a squad already under fire from fans and pundits. With United struggling for consistency in the league and Europe, the question is whether a change of manager would fix the club’s problems or whether, as Gerrard suggests, the squad itself needs rebuilding.
