Threads rolls out AI-powered trending summaries to four new regions

Meta’s Threads has expanded its AI-generated trending topic summaries to four new countries — Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Brazil — continuing its push to become the go-to platform for real-time public conversation. The feature, which lives within the app’s Explore tab, surfaces brief overviews of the most-discussed topics among Threads users at any given moment.

How the feature works

The summaries are generated automatically by AI, drawing on what users are actively engaging with across the platform. However, Threads has been careful to keep human oversight in the loop — a dedicated team reviews trending topics to ensure they do not violate community guidelines before they surface to users. Notably, Threads has branded these as “timely topics” rather than “trends,” a deliberate choice to set realistic expectations about what the feature actually reflects.Threads Chief Connor Hayes confirmed the rollout, noting the team is actively working to bring the feature to more countries beyond the current expansion. The feature first launched in the United States back in February 2024, and has been gradually making its way to international audiences since.

The race against X

This expansion is strategically significant for Threads as it battles X for dominance in real-time conversation. Threads currently boasts 400 million monthly active users, compared to X’s claimed 600 million — a gap that continues to narrow. By making trending discussions more discoverable across global markets, Threads hopes to deepen in-the-moment engagement and attract users who typically turn to X for breaking news and live events.

While X still holds a significant advantage rooted in years of habit and established communities, Threads is gaining meaningful traction. Its measured approach to deploying trend-related features — prioritising accuracy and safety over speed — could prove to be a long-term differentiator as it looks to cement itself as a credible alternative for topical discourse worldwide.
