PSG Granted Break Ahead of Liverpool Clash as Ligue 1 Race Heats Up

In a strategic move to prioritize European glory, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been granted a weekend off from domestic duties. The French league leaders were scheduled to face RC Lens on April 11, but the high-stakes clash has been postponed to May 13 at PSG’s request. The decision allows Luis Enrique’s side extra preparation time for their upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool at Anfield on April 15.

The Battle for Third Intensifies

While PSG rests, the rest of Ligue 1 remains embroiled in a frantic race for the final automatic Champions League qualification spot. With PSG sitting comfortably at the top with 63 points and Lens trailing in second with 59, the spotlight shifts to the cluster of teams vying for third. Lille currently holds the position with 50 points, but a mere three points separate them from seventh-placed Rennes. Marseille and Monaco follow closely, both tied on 49 points, ensuring that every match this weekend carries season-defining weight.

Stars Return and Injury Woes

The weekend’s fixtures offer several compelling storylines, none more anticipated than the potential return of Paul Pogba for Monaco. Sidelined since early December with a calf injury, the French midfielder is expected to feature in the squad against Paris FC on Friday. Monaco will also look to the red-hot Folarin Balogun, who has already netted 10 league goals this season. Meanwhile, Rennes will rely on Esteban Lepaul, whose clinical finishing has seen him surge to the top of the scoring charts with 16 goals.

However, injuries continue to plague the league. PSG remains without Fabián Ruiz (knee), and Monaco will miss Brazilian fullbacks Caio Henrique and Vanderson (hamstring), adding further tension to a weekend that could reshape the European landscape for next season.
