Lewis Capaldi makes surprise return at charity gig in Edinburgh
Lewis Capaldi disclosed he was taking a break from touring after struggling at the 2023 Glastonbury Festival.
Performs Six-Song Set at Tom Walker’s CALM Benefit Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week
Lewis Capaldi made a heartwarming return to the stage on May 2, surprising fans at Tom Walker’s charity concert in Edinburgh, Scotland. The show, held at Assembly Halls, was in support of the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a UK-based suicide prevention charity.
Capaldi, who has been on a touring hiatus since mid-2023 to focus on his mental health, performed a six-song set, closing with his chart-topping hit “Someone You Loved.” The performance marked a rare public appearance and was met with overwhelming enthusiasm and emotion from fans.
A Surprise That Moved the Crowd
Attendees were initially told to expect a special guest following performances by Walker and fellow artist Nina Nesbitt. The atmosphere turned electric when Capaldi appeared on stage, prompting fans to take to social media with emotional reactions. One attendee posted, “Lewis Capaldi being a surprise guest was the best thing ever. What a gig.”
Concert Series Supports Mental Health Initiatives
The Edinburgh show is the first of three phone-free concerts organized to raise awareness and funds for CALM, ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week (May 12–18). The upcoming events include:
- May 6 in Stirling, featuring Declan McKenna and Bradley Simpson
- May 10 in Glasgow, with Nathan Evans, Saint PHNX, and Caity Baser
Capaldi’s appearance was especially poignant given his decision in June 2023 to step away from touring after struggling with Tourette’s syndrome during his Glastonbury performance. Fans at that festival famously joined him in finishing his song, a moment that showcased the deep bond between the artist and his audience.
His return at Friday’s gig not only delighted fans but also emphasized the importance of mental health support and community connection through music.
