Lionel Messi to Watch Kolkata Derby During India Tour
Football legend Lionel Messi is set to embark on a three-day tour of India from December 13-15, 2025, sparking excitement among fans across the country. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and 2022 FIFA World Cup champion will begin his journey in Kolkata before visiting Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Delhi.
The highlight of Messi’s Kolkata visit will be witnessing a special exhibition match dubbed the “Kolkata Derby” at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium. Organized by Satadru Dutta, the match will feature Mohunbagan Messi All Stars versus East Bengal Messi All Stars, with both teams comprising Indian and international football stars. Messi himself will present the trophy to the winning team, making it a memorable tribute to Kolkata’s rich football heritage.
Why Kolkata Matters for Football
Known as the “Mecca of Indian football,” Kolkata boasts a storied football tradition with three of India’s oldest clubs—Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan Sporting Club—all originating from the city. Dutta emphasized that a Messi visit without experiencing the legendary Kolkata Derby would be incomplete.
Additional Tour Plans
Beyond Kolkata, reports suggest Messi may also participate in matches in other cities. Earlier announcements indicated that Argentina would play a friendly exhibition match against Australia on November 17 in Kochi at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, with tickets going on sale from October 15.
The tour, coordinated with various state sports departments and sponsors, promises to be a landmark event for Indian football fans eager to witness one of the greatest players in history.
