Meta to Use AI Conversations for Ad Targeting
Meta has announced a significant update to how it uses artificial intelligence data, revealing that conversations with Meta AI will soon influence the advertisements users see across its platforms. Starting December 16, 2025, interactions with the company’s AI chatbot will be incorporated into Meta’s advertising algorithm, affecting content shown on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp.
The social media giant, which reports over 1 billion monthly Meta AI users, will begin notifying people about this change next week through in-app notifications and emails. The company states this update aims to make content recommendations and advertisements more relevant to individual users’ interests and needs.
How Your AI Chats Become Ad Data
Meta explains that both voice and text interactions with its AI features will inform the platform’s understanding of user preferences. For example, if someone discusses hiking with Meta AI, they may subsequently see recommendations for hiking groups, trail-related posts from friends, or advertisements for outdoor gear. This mirrors how Meta currently uses other engagement signals like posts, likes, and page follows.
Privacy Protections and Limitations
The company has built in certain safeguards for sensitive topics. Conversations involving religion, sexual orientation, political views, health information, racial or ethnic origin, or philosophical beliefs will be excluded from ad targeting purposes. However, all other interactions will contribute to Meta’s data profiles for personalized advertising.
For advertisers, this represents a valuable new data stream that could enhance audience targeting capabilities. For users, it marks another integration of AI-generated insights into Meta’s already comprehensive data collection ecosystem.
