Serena Williams wins US Open first-round match after shaky start
The 23-time Grand Slam champion says Serena Williams plans to retire from professional tennis after the US Open.
He’s not done yet.
Serena Williams announced last month that she had “developed a long way from tennis” and wowed the US Open crowd with every stroke as she beat Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-3, 6-3.
In the second round, she met second seed Annette Kontaveit of Estonia.
As Williams stood in front of the net after her win, in a black top shimmering with a gold sheen, she turned around and raised her left arm to the sky with a big smile.
“I feel very comfortable on this court in front of everyone here, and I want to do my best.” The audience, including former President Bill Clinton, Queen Latifah, Spike Lee, Bella Hadid, and other high-profile players, stood with rapturous applause as Gayle King took the stage to pay tribute to Williams after the game.
Their daughter Olympia, dressed in matching outfits also the arms of William’s husband, Alexis Ohanian, stood nearby.
“I think Serena said ‘not today, not today,'” King said.
And after a shaky start, not really today, Williams, turning 41 in a matter of weeks, will be playing the final singles match of a pro career that began nearly 27 years ago.
Throughout the match, the crowd supported Williams with a shaky start also unwarranted mistakes.
“I love you, Serena,” one man shouted as Kovinich nearly fell to the ground. After her win, Williams was ask to look forward to her next match, but she want to enjoy this win.
