TikTok U.S. Hit by Second Oracle Data Center Outage in Weeks

TikTok’s U.S. operations are once again under strain following a second Oracle data center disruption in a matter of weeks. TikTok USDS JV, the newly formed U.S.-based entity overseeing the platform, confirmed on March 3 that an issue at an Oracle facility was causing delays for creators trying to upload content. Oracle separately acknowledged that customers in its Ashburn location were experiencing connection timeouts, errors, and increased latency due to a technical fault.

A Rocky Start for TikTok’s U.S. Transition

This latest disruption follows a similarly troubled debut for the platform after its ownership changeover. During its first week under new management, extreme weather conditions triggered outages across multiple Oracle data centers, leaving users unable to see view counts or upload videos. Some users wrongly attributed those issues to deliberate censorship, prompting TikTok USDS to publicly deny any intentional interference.

The new outage is likely to reignite those same suspicions, particularly given the politically sensitive climate surrounding TikTok’s U.S. operations.

Algorithm Control Adds to User Concerns

Adding fuel to the speculation is the structure of the new ownership agreement. Under its terms, the TikTok USDS joint venture holds authority to retrain and update TikTok’s content recommendation algorithm using U.S. user data — all housed within Oracle’s cloud environment. With those same systems now experiencing repeated failures, concerns about algorithmic manipulation are unlikely to fade quickly.

Despite the timing, there is no concrete evidence of deliberate interference. However, repeated infrastructure failures at such a critical juncture present a serious credibility challenge for TikTok’s new U.S. leadership as it works to establish user trust.
