X Launches Enhanced DM System With End-to-End Encryption
X has announced a broader rollout of its updated direct messaging interface to all users, featuring improved encryption and enhanced security features previously tested with paying subscribers. The new system offers end-to-end encrypted chats, file sharing capabilities, and the ability to edit, delete, or send disappearing messages. Users can also launch video chats directly from the interface, with voice memos coming soon.
A Major Step in Musk’s “Everything App” Strategy
This update represents a key component of Elon Musk’s long-promised overhaul to transform X into his “everything app” vision. Musk aims to replicate the ubiquity of Chinese messaging platforms like WeChat for the Western market, integrating messaging, payments, and financial services into a unified platform. The improved DM system is designed to facilitate various interactions, including monetary transactions within the app.
Security Concerns Persist Despite Improvements
However, experts have raised significant concerns about X’s encryption security. While Musk previously labeled the initial DM encryption as “clunky,” and later undertook a full backend overhaul, security specialists continue to question the robustness of the system. Musk has acknowledged the encryption isn’t perfect, stating his goal is to create the “least insecure” messaging system available. With Musk’s public reputation declining and questions surrounding data safety, adoption of X’s DM features for sensitive communications—particularly financial transactions—remains uncertain among users prioritizing security and privacy.
