Zayn Releases “Break Free” for Borderlands 4 Game
Former One Direction member Zayn has unveiled his latest musical venture with “Break Free,” an original track created exclusively for the highly anticipated video game Borderlands 4. The song, set to release on September 19, marks a creative departure for the British singer-songwriter as he ventures into gaming soundtrack territory.
Gaming Passion Drives Collaboration
The collaboration stems from Zayn’s genuine love for gaming, particularly the Borderlands franchise. “When I’m not working or with my daughter, my usual place is in front of the console, gaming with my friends back home in the UK,” Zayn revealed. Having played previous Borderlands games, the opportunity to contribute music was an obvious choice for the avid gamer.
Borderlands 4 introduces players to the new planet Kairos, featuring four unique Vault Hunters with distinct abilities. The game’s vivid art direction and anime-inspired aesthetic particularly appealed to Zayn, who described it as “very expressive” and praised its narrative focus in today’s gaming landscape.
New Creative Territory
Working on “Break Free” allowed Zayn to explore uncharted creative waters beyond his comfort zone. Following 2024’s introspective album “Room Under the Stairs,” this collaboration represents a sonic experiment that doesn’t need to align with his personal album work. The singer describes it as “fun to experiment with new sounds” while venturing into collaborative territory.
Fans can catch a preview during Zayn’s Twitch livestream tonight at 9 p.m. ET, where he’ll play Borderlands 4 and discuss the collaboration. The song will feature an accompanying music video when it officially drops next week.
