Manchester United Seal Champions League Return Under Caretaker Carrick
Manchester United have secured Champions League qualification under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford cementing their place in the top three. The win, sealed by Kobbie Mainoo’s 77th-minute strike, has reignited discussions about handing Carrick the role on a permanent basis.
Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in just the sixth minute before Benjamin Sesko doubled United’s lead shortly after. Liverpool fought back through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo in the second half, levelling the scores before Mainoo’s composed finish from the edge of the box proved the difference.
Carrick’s Numbers Make the Case
Since stepping in as caretaker in January, the 44-year-old has transformed United’s season. He has won 10 of his 14 matches in charge, lifting the club into third place with 64 points from 35 games — a remarkable recovery from a troubled first half of the campaign. Champions League qualification, which appeared distant when Carrick first took the reins, has now been achieved with three matches to spare.
“When we came in, the Champions League was a little bit in the distance, so to be where we are, with three games to spare, is a good achievement,” Carrick said after the match.
The Decision United Must Now Make
Despite the impressive turnaround, a permanent appointment is not guaranteed. A return to European football brings added fixtures, pressure, and the need for deeper squad resources. United’s board must now weigh whether Carrick is equipped to manage at that level long-term, or whether a more experienced name is required. For now, though, few at the club can argue with the results.
