TikTok and Disney Team Up on Creator Content Deal
TikTok and Disney have announced a sweeping licensing partnership that will let creators on the app incorporate approved Disney characters and scenes into their own short-form videos. Described as a first-of-its-kind global arrangement, the deal will initially roll out in the United States before expanding to other markets.
Cross-Platform Content Sharing
Under the agreement, participating creators who opt in will have their Disney-themed videos featured not just on TikTok but also within a dedicated space on Disney+, giving fan-made content a new home alongside Disney’s official streaming library. The partnership spans multiple Disney properties, including Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and FX, giving creators a wide range of characters and stories to draw from.
The deal also introduces a Disney Creator Ambassador Program, designed to reward top-performing creators with greater visibility, access to exclusive events, and career development opportunities. Disney framed the initiative as part of its broader effort to build relationships with emerging creative talent through TikTok’s engaged community.
A Shift Away From AI-Generated Content
The move comes after Disney’s earlier venture into AI-generated content. In December, Disney partnered with OpenAI to allow Sora users to create videos featuring licensed Disney characters, but that agreement ended in March following OpenAI’s decision to scale back the Sora platform.
Rather than continuing to bet on AI tools amid ongoing IP licensing concerns, Disney appears to be pivoting toward creator-driven platforms like TikTok to stay connected with younger audiences. The company will be watching closely to see how creators use these assets and how the cross-platform content performs on Disney+.
