Haaland Overtakes Messi With Record 60 Champions League Goals

Erling Haaland has rewritten the Champions League record books, reaching 60 goals in the competition in just 60 appearances, 20 matches fewer than Lionel Messi needed. The Manchester City striker marked the milestone with a 53rd-minute header against Paris Saint-Germain, although his side ultimately lost the match.

A Pace Messi Could Not Match

Haaland added a second goal in the 75th minute to finish the night on 61 Champions League goals, making him City’s all-time leading scorer in the competition. After 60 appearances he has 61 goals, while Messi had 39 at the same stage. The Norwegian also reached the landmark at 26 years and 85 days, one day younger than Messi was when he got there.

Messi’s overall numbers remain extraordinary. The Argentine left European football with 129 Champions League goals in 163 appearances across 19 seasons with Barcelona and PSG. That total includes 120 for Barcelona, the most by any player for a single club, and he won the tournament four times. Haaland’s achievement is therefore about speed rather than total output.

Redefining Striker Benchmarks

Haaland’s scoring rate is prompting analysts to rethink how elite forwards are judged in Europe’s top club competition. Consistency and efficiency are now measured against a player averaging roughly a goal per game, leaving few historical records feeling safe. If he maintains this form, the targets for future strikers may need to be raised considerably.

For City, however, the celebration was tempered by defeat. Haaland’s record-breaking display could not prevent the loss, but it underlined why his name now features in conversations about the greatest goalscorers the Champions League has seen.
