Instagram Launches New Algorithm Control for Reels Feeds
Instagram is rolling out a new algorithm control feature designed to give users greater authority over the content they see on Reels. The update introduces a simplified “Your Algorithm” section within Reels settings, allowing users to view and manage the topics Instagram’s system believes they’re interested in.
How the Feature Works
The new tool displays content topics in broad categories that users can easily modify by adding or removing subject groups. When users tap into specific topics, Instagram provides examples of Reels they’ll encounter and offers management options for each category. This transparency gives users meaningful context to decide whether to retain or eliminate topics from their preferences.
User Adoption Questions Remain
While the feature represents one of the most practical algorithm control implementations available across social platforms, experts question whether users will actually engage with it. Historical data suggests otherwise—the vast majority of social media users ignore privacy settings, data controls, and algorithm preferences despite demanding these options exist. Following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook introduced extensive data controls, yet behavioral change proved minimal.
Meta appears to use algorithm control features as reassurance rather than genuine tools, knowing most users won’t adjust their preferences. By offering the option, the company can address public concerns about algorithmic manipulation while benefiting from AI-powered recommendations that drive substantial platform engagement. As Instagram’s 3 billion users gain access to this feature, adoption rates will likely remain low, leaving platforms free to continue algorithmic curation largely unchallenged.
