Instagram Tests Manual Control for Reels Algorithm

Instagram is testing a groundbreaking feature that allows users to manually control their Reels algorithm, marking a significant shift toward user-driven content curation. The new “Your Algorithm” section, currently available to select users, displays simplified topic groups that Instagram’s system believes users are interested in, with options to add or remove subjects.

The feature, announced in September 2025, represents one of the most transparent algorithm control implementations from any major social platform. Users can access the tool through a menu option in their Reels feed, where they’ll find broad topic categories based on their viewing history. Each topic displays example Reels, providing context before users decide whether to keep or remove it from their preferences.

The User Adoption Challenge

Despite the innovative approach, Meta faces a familiar obstacle: user engagement with control features. Historical data shows that most social media users rarely adjust privacy settings or customize their experience, even when vocal about wanting such options. Following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook introduced extensive data control settings, yet the company’s former VP of Global Marketing confirmed minimal changes in user behavior regarding data sharing.

Will Users Actually Use It?

Industry observers question whether Instagram’s 3 billion users will actively manage their algorithm preferences. Meta has consistently benefited from users accepting default settings, as AI-powered recommendations drive higher engagement. While the feature addresses concerns about algorithmic manipulation and AI-driven content delivery, it may function more as reassurance than a widely-used tool.

The test rollout continues as Instagram gauges user response to this transparency initiative.
